How to Choose a Coffee Business Education Course

Do I need to invest in a coffee business education course if I want to open a coffee shop?

There is no one way to open a coffee business. People do it every day, and they all rely on their own skills, education, background, and network to make it happen.

But, opening a coffee business means juggling finances and budgeting, commercial leases, barista training, coffee equipment, permits, marketing, and more (all at once, often for the first time). That’s a lot to learn through trial and error, and most people don’t come to the table with prior knowledge in all of those areas.

So no, you don’t technically need a coffee business education course to open a coffee shop. But, it will make the process a lot easier. Because you will:

  • Start with answers to all of the questions that come up along the way
  • Avoid mistakes that could cost you tens of thousands of dollars and months (or years) of your life
  • Open confidently knowing that you have absolutely set your business up to succeed from day one

Which coffee business education course is worth your time and money?

If you’re going to invest your time and money into a coffee education program (and yes, we think you should), make sure it’s going to be absolutely worth it. Let’s be honest: not all programs are equal.

Here’s what you should look for in a course. (And, what you should avoid.)

Top priorities for your coffee business education course

Focus on opening and operating a coffee business. A good course should be built specifically around a retail coffee business, not adapted from general small business theory and a template. Texas Coffee School’s 3-Day Coffee Business Master Class® curriculum walks you through the realities and detailed nuances of this specific business and industry.

Proof of concept. Anyone can build a curriculum and put a price tag on it. What matters is whether that curriculum has actually produced successful, currently operating coffee businesses. Not only does Texas Coffee School have hundreds of 5-star reviews on Google and Facebook from students who have attended our course, we also have students who own and operate 750+ coffee shops all over the world.

Hands-on training. Watching videos about steaming milk or dialing in an espresso grinder is not the same as doing it. At Texas Coffee School, you train on commercial equipment with a highly experienced teacher by your side to coach you, troubleshoot problems, and answer questions as they come up. You’ll also learn the workflow and efficiency of a veteran barista, then put it all together by taking orders, making drinks, and practicing customer service with classmates in a realistic café environment.

Current, constantly refined curriculum that helps you navigate the specialty coffee industry in real time. The coffee industry has changed considerably in the past several years. (Think rising costs, shifting consumer habits after the pandemic, and new generations who like different drinks and experiences.) At Texas Coffee School, we have refined our curriculum continuously since 2010, updating the way we teach students to operate, market, adopt technology, and make drinks.

Financial and operations tools included. You shouldn’t leave a coffee business course with only concepts in your head. Texas Coffee School sends every student home with usable tools: detailed financial plan spreadsheets, budgeting templates, operations manuals, vendor recommendations, equipment lists, cafe designs, lease negotiation tools and sample LOI, and more.

More to look for when signing up for a coffee business education course

  • Small class sizes with enough instructor access for personalized coaching and feedback
  • Experienced, full-time teachers who are invested in your success long term, whose primary job is teaching and supporting students, not occasional guest lecturers brought in for a class
  • A track record of graduate success across different business models and locations (carts, trucks, cafes, restaurants, hybrid businesses, etc…)
  • A turn-key course that doesn’t require you to purchase add-ons, extra consulting, additional classes, or a membership just to access the material
  • Not a sales platform. The course should exist to educate you, not to funnel you toward buying equipment, beans, or a subscription once class ends
  • More than a certificate. A certificate can be useful, but it shouldn’t be the product. Look for practical, field-tested training you can immediately apply to make better decisions, avoid costly mistakes, and build a profitable, sustainable coffee business. The real measure of a course isn’t the credential you leave with. It’s what you’re actually equipped to do when you leave.

Red flags to avoid

  • All theory, little practical application. Business concepts like leadership, budgeting, and operations matter, but they’re only part of the education. If a coffee business program doesn’t also address the practical realities of barista skills, equipment, permits, build-outs, menus, workflow, and day-to-day operations, you may leave knowing a lot about business without knowing how to actually open and run one (in the real world).
  • A brand-new, unproven program. Before you enroll, ask how long the coffee business program has been running and how many students have gone on to actually open and run successful coffee businesses. Ask how many of them are still in business today. A program without a transparent track record is a risk when you’re spending thousands of dollars and weeks of your time.
  • Drawn-out timelines with filler content. Longer isn’t better. A 12-week commitment stretched across months often means less focused, less actionable content, not more.
  • Upsells. Watch for programs that charge one price up front, then expect you to pay more for access to all the material. Avoid classes that push consulting packages, sell equipment (and use the class for marketing), or make you subscribe as a member once class ends.
  • Large class sizes with limited access to expert instructors. If you’re one of 20 students learning on a Zoom screen, you won’t get the personal attention or direct mentorship you’re hoping for.

Comparing Texas Coffee School’s 3-Day Coffee Business Master Class® to Competitors’ Courses

SCA

The Specialty Coffee Association recently launched a new Coffee Business Education program, a 12-week cohort course aimed at current and aspiring coffee shop owners and managers. It’s worth a closer look at how it stacks up against Texas Coffee School’s 3-Day Coffee Business Master Class®.

The SCA’s course covers business fundamentals: leadership, strategy, operations, and finance, delivered through pre-recorded, self-paced video modules. There are live discussion sessions with a cohort of 20 students led by a discussion leader.

It runs 12 weeks, entirely online. There is no coffee education or barista training component or proven business tools and resource materials. There is no track record of successful student graduates. The program costs $2,350.

Don’t Take it From Us

Of course, it’s worth stating the obvious here: of course we recommend our own course over any other! And it’s true. We believe with confidence that we have created a program that is unmatched in the industry. Over the past 16 years, we’ve watched our students leave our classroom and open thriving businesses, time and time again. After 750, we start to think we’re doing something right.

But as a consumer and future business owner, you’ve got to look to the students who have taken the leap before you. Here’s a recent review from one of our former students and his experience in the course:

Real Student Google Review of Texas Coffee School’s 3-Day Coffee Master Class®

“My wife and I recently attended the 3-Day Coffee Business Master Class, and we can honestly say it exceeded every expectation we had.

The course is incredibly informative, comprehensive, and thoughtfully organized. It covers not only the obvious aspects of opening and running a coffee business, but also countless details and potential pitfalls that most aspiring owners would never think to consider until it’s too late. The curriculum truly gives you a complete roadmap, from concept to operations, with practical tools and proven systems designed to help you succeed.

What impressed us most was how relevant and real-world everything was. This wasn’t theoretical or outdated information: it was current, practical knowledge based on today’s coffee industry that we can immediately apply to our own business. Every lesson was backed by real experience, making it easy to understand not just “what” to do, but “why” it matters.

Tom and Meaghan were outstanding instructors. They were professional, welcoming, incredibly knowledgeable, and genuinely passionate about helping every student succeed. They took the time to answer every question thoroughly, shared their personal experiences openly, and created an environment where everyone felt comfortable participating.

The hands-on training was another huge highlight. Actually working with the equipment and experiencing the workflow firsthand gave us a much deeper understanding of how a successful coffee business operates day to day. It’s one thing to read about coffee operations, but it’s completely different to practice them in a real training environment.

The small class size made a tremendous difference. Everyone received personal attention, there was plenty of time for questions and discussion, and we never felt rushed. It felt more like being mentored than simply attending a class.

I’ll admit that before attending, we thought the tuition seemed expensive. After completing the three days, we can confidently say it is worth every single penny. In today’s world, there’s no shortage of free information online, YouTube videos, blogs, and podcasts. However, what you receive in this class is something entirely different: years of industry experience, proven systems, practical resources, expert guidance, and insights that simply aren’t available through random internet searches. The amount of value packed into these three days would have taken us years of trial and error, and likely many costly mistakes, to discover on our own.

If you’re serious about opening or growing a coffee business, we wholeheartedly recommend this class. It gave us confidence, clarity, and a realistic understanding of what it takes to build a successful coffee business. Thank you, Tom and Megan, for creating such an exceptional learning experience!
