At first glance, Serenity Sips Bar and Wellness Emporium might seem similar to other community-centered coffee shops. The cozy, modern bar in the Woodlands, TX, serves classic cafe drinks, often to networking or small business gatherings. The cafe boasts fresh baked goods with clean ingredients and co-working-friendly spaces.
A closer look at the menu, however, will reveal specialty drinks with a clear focus: wellness. And the rooms beyond the cafe? Those are stocked with state-of-the art holistic wellness technologies: red light therapy, sauna, compression and heat therapy, and more. Along with craft coffee and networking, Serenity Sips members can leave fully reset and recharged.
The team behind Serenity Sips wanted to create a hybrid business where feeling good is baked into every facet. From the menu to the services to the welcoming atmosphere, Serenity Sips strives to nourish its community, body and soul.
In this article, we break down not just the mission, but the nuances of this unique coffee shop business:

Serenity Sips Owner CJ Potter is a self-proclaimed lifelong learner. She’s spent her career accumulating the knowledge and experiences that would lead her to where she is now. Ultimately, it was recovering from a traumatic brain injury that solidified her commitment to the healing powers of wellness technology, combined with a supportive environment. The idea for Serenity Sips was born. And, lucky for CJ, she already had the right team assembled to make it happen.
CJ owns Serenity Sips with husband Ryan, who helps lead the business using his operations and military experience. CJ’s sister Gracie is a co-owner with a pulse on daily operations and a knack for building community connections. Their mom handles both backend finances and homemade chicken salad–a true jack of all trades. Finally, CJ’s dad was the general contractor who brought the vision of the space to life.
A year in, the staff has grown beyond immediate family. “But they’ve become family, too,” Gracie and CJ tell us.
Like CJ, Gracie’s got a packed resume with diverse career experiences that have prepared her for her current role at Serenity Sips. For this multi-talented family, the common thread seems to be a scrappy work ethic and unwavering support for what they’re building together. All the career experiences that came first–in healthcare practices, the military, construction, and more–came together to bring a business from vision to open in just a few short months.

As far as business models go, Serenity Sips is a true hybrid. The space includes:
Serenity Sips celebrated its first year in business this fall. Supporting them were many new connections the business has forged within the community. Gracie made Serenity Sips an active participant in two local Chambers: the Montgomery County Hispanic Chamber and the Woodlands Area Chamber of Commerce.
Local businesses, entrepreneurs, and networking groups use the space (Serenity Sips is in a renovated house, with multiple private rooms for meetings) to meet and gather. The small business community, including neighbor and friend Galindo’s, another coffee-hybrid pioneer in the area, has helped the business succeed in this first year.
Already established as a coffee shop and networking spot, CJ and Gracie want to spend the next year doubling down on wellness memberships. CJ was intentional about curating a collection of FDA and medical director-approved technology for the space. Now, they want to focus on sharing the benefits with more of the community.
Despite their many talents, there was one unstudied area for CJ’s family as they set out to open their business: coffee. They’d need a solid foundation of business and barista training to build out the coffee program that would eventually bring repeat customers through their doors.
Gracie and a coffee-passionate niece attended Texas Coffee School’s 3-Day Coffee Business Master Class®. Together, they learned hands-on barista training and how to build the program from the ground up. Now, coffee is the way many customers become acquainted with Serenity Sips. They wander in for a drink, stay for the nurturing atmosphere, and come back time and time again for everything the business (and the people running it) have to offer.
It’s proof that as a business model, coffee lays a common ground. No matter the business–whether it’s wellness technology like Serenity Sips or a barber shop like Galindo’s–coffee can drive in foot traffic and build a whole new customer base. Bending the menu toward your concept is just another way to drive home your business’s mission.
“Born from our family’s dream, our mission is to blend relaxation, wellness, and community into one unparalleled experience,” says the Serenity Sips team. One year after opening, we know they’re just getting started.
